India’s Remarkable Social Progress: Lifting 25 Crore People Above the Poverty Line

India has made significant strides in reducing poverty over the past nine years, uplifting an impressive 25 crore people above the poverty line. According to a recent discussion paper released by NITI Aayog, India has witnessed a remarkable decline in multidimensional poverty, with a reduction of 17.89 percentage points from 29.17% in 2013-14 to 11.28% in 2022-23.

The study, titled ‘Multidimensional Poverty in India since 2005-06,’ highlights the substantial improvement across all 12 indicators of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) during this period. The findings credit the government’s significant initiatives in addressing various dimensions of poverty as the driving force behind this achievement.

Technical inputs from renowned organizations like Oxford Policy and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have contributed to the paper’s analysis. The data used in the study includes projected estimates for the year 2022-23, as there were limitations in obtaining specific period data.

The report also states that India is on track to achieve its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) target of halving multidimensional poverty well before 2030. This decline in poverty can be attributed to notable initiatives such as Poshan Abhiyan and Anemia Mukt Bharat, which have improved access to healthcare facilities and reduced deprivation.

India’s commitment to food security is evident through the Targeted Public Distribution System under the National Food Security Act, which covers 81.35 crore beneficiaries and provides food grains to both rural and urban populations. Recent decisions, like the extension of free food grain distribution under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana for another five years, further demonstrate the government’s dedication to eradicating poverty.

Various programs addressing maternal health, clean cooking fuel distribution through Ujjwala Yojana, improved electricity coverage via Saubhagya, and transformative campaigns like Swachh Bharat Mission and Jal Jeevan Mission have collectively enhanced living conditions and overall well-being. Additionally, flagship programs like Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana and PM Awas Yojana have played pivotal roles in promoting financial inclusion and providing safe housing for the underprivileged.

India’s remarkable progress in reducing poverty is a testament to the government’s comprehensive approach and relentless efforts to uplift millions of its citizens. With continued dedication and the implementation of effective policies, India is paving the way for a more inclusive and prosperous future for all.
